What Is Good Ratio For Ldl To Hdl ?

Cholesterol can be classified into two types, namely LDL cholesterol and HDL cholesterol where LDL is considered to bad cholesterol and HDL the good cholesterol. Maintaining a good LDL to HDL ratio is a good way of reducing the risks of heart disease.

As it happens in all cases, here also the focus is on increasing the level of HDL cholesterol and decreasing the level of LDL cholesterol. In this way a good ratio is maintained between the LDL and HDL cholesterol. For example, if the HDL cholesterol level of a person is 50 mg/dl and the LDL cholesterol level is 150 mg/dl this means that the ratio between LDL and HDL is 3. One can calculate the LDL/ HDL ratio by dividing LDL levels by HDL levels. LDL level mentioned in this example is 150 and HDL is 50. So, the ratio would 150 divided by 50 which is equal to 3. However, The ideal ratio between LDL and HDL is 4.

The better the ratio, the lower the chances of the person suffering from heart diseases. Hence, when a person has high LDL levels or low HDL levels, he should work towards improving them so as to achieve a good LDL to HDL ratio. HDL levels can be increased through aerobic exercise, eating the right kind of foods which include omega 3 fatty acids and not trans fatty acids and nutritional supplements.

Though there is great emphasis on maintaining the LDL/HDL ratio, doctors prefer to use the actual numbers for HDL and LDL to plan a treatment for the same and irrespective of what the ratio is, the golden rule is that LDL levels should be low and HDL levels should be high.
